Rotary Club launches fund raiser for local woman battling cancer

Grande Cache’s fledgling Rotary Club is off to an ambitious start.
The service club’s first project is to aid a Grande Cache woman and her family in a battle against cancer.
The local Rotary Club is putting on a spaghetti dinner at the Royal Canadian Legion, Apr. 18, to support the Sandra Alden-MacAskill Wish Fund.
Proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will be added to a larger community initiative to send Sandra and her family with an enjoyable holiday to bolster their spirits as she battles terminal cancer.
“Sandra grew up here and works at their family businesses,” says Rotary Club member Donna Spencer. “She gives a lot to the community and we want to give something back to her.”
This project illustrates the importance of service clubs like the Rotary Club, notes Mrs. Spencer.
With the Lions Club now dormant, Grande Cache has been without an active service club for years.
Members of the Rotary Club in Grande Prairie saw this gaping hole and moved to foster a club in Grande Cache, says Mrs. Spencer.
The club now has about 10 members and it’s actively seeking new members. The club now holds weekly lunch meetings but the schedule could change to suit its membership.
Rotary is the world’s oldest service club organization with more than 32,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries. The members of these clubs are called Rotarians and they form a global network of 1.2 million business and professional leaders, all volunteering their time and talents to serve their communities and the world.
“The whole idea is to have fun and to help our community,” notes Mrs. Spencer. “If this isn’t enjoyable for the members then it won’t be successful.”
